On Sunday evening, the body of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu was brought back to Accra, the capital of Ghana, after he was found dead under a collapsed building in southern Turkey. He had gone missing since the 6th of February, when a 7.8 earthquake caused an apartment building in Hatay to collapse, and brought the entire Country to its knees.

Atsu had been due to fly out of Turkey on the day of the earthquake, but Hatayspor’s manager said on Friday that he had decided to stay with the club after scoring the winning goal in a match the day before. He had signed with Hatayspor in September 2020, after playing for English Premier League teams Everton, Chelsea and Newcastle United.

At the Kotoko International Airport, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia and a large military honor guard received the coffin, which was draped in the Ghanaian national flag. Atsu was 31 years old.
