Coco Gauff Advances to Quarter Finals at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, CA. – Coco Gauff was able to battle back after falling behind in the third set to beat Rebecca Peterson 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. She held off three break points while serving 4-all, and closed out the match in the next game.

Four years ago, Peterson had beaten a then-14-year-old Gauff in a Challenger tournament in Michigan. Gauff commented on the match, saying she believes her mental strength was the key to her victory, but acknowledged the beating she took four years ago, stating, “Yeah, she whooped me really bad!”

The American will face No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka, who won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 over 16th-seeded Barbora Krejcikova.

In other fourth-round matches, Maria Sakkari beat Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

In Men’s action, defending champion Taylor Fritz won 6-4, 6-3 against Marton Fucsovics.

Daniil Medvedev triumphed over Alexander Zverev 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-5, and Cameron Norrie beat Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-4.
